Geomancy: Digital Sand

Geomancy (JEE-oh-man-see) is a divination method that uses 16 figures composed of single and double dots arranged in four rows. The word means 'divination by earth,' as practitioners traditionally generated figures by making random marks in sand or soil. It is one of the most mathematically elegant divination systems, using binary computation to derive meaning.

A shield chart is the full geomantic reading layout. It begins with four randomly generated Mother figures, from which four Daughters are derived by transposition. Mothers and Daughters combine in pairs to produce four Nieces, which combine to form two Witnesses, which produce a Judge, and finally a Reconciler. Each figure in the chart has a specific divinatory role.

Traditionally, figures are generated by making random marks in sand or on paper — you make four rows of random dots, then count whether each row has an odd number (single dot) or even number (double dots). Modern practitioners also use dice, coin tosses, or digital random number generators. Only the four Mother figures are generated randomly; all others are derived mathematically.

In geomancy, a single dot represents an active or odd principle (similar to yang in the I Ching), while double dots represent a passive or even principle (similar to yin). Each of the 16 figures is a unique combination of four rows of single or double dots, creating a 4-bit binary pattern that corresponds to elemental and planetary energies.

Geomancy is unique in that only four figures are randomly generated — everything else is computed through binary addition. This makes it the most deterministic divination system: given the same four Mothers, the entire chart is predetermined. It also uses no cards, runes, or coins — just patterns of dots, making it the 'assembly language' of divination.
